War of Attrition, the war that didn't happen! In 1968...

President Nasser, from Egypt, looks at troops movement

The War of Attrition started in 1968 in the Middle East with battles between Israel and Egypt. One year before an offensive from Israel was a success and it was known as the Six-Day War. But the Egypt government did not accept this victory and so started in 1968 a series of battles that lasted till 1970.

Thousands of people died during these battles but the curious fact was that after three years of conflict the war was over and things were just like when it started: neither Israel or Egypt had one more centimeter of land after the War of Attrition!

At the beginning, the forecast of specialists was that Israel would have another remakable victory, as it happened in 1967. But remember: the War of Attrition started in 1968 and nothing that happened in this year could be labeled as "normal".  So, after the battles in which the Egypt tried to put Israel out of Sinai and a lot of hostilities took place along the Suez Canal the result was none. Things just stayed as they were before the beginning of the war.

For Egypt the good news about this war was that the country showed its reaction after the failure in the Six-Day War. For Israel it was another demonstration that the Arab countries would have to fight a lot to take some of the their prior lands back. But in a practical sense the War of Attrition meant nothing.

Non-sense? Yes, if we were in a regular year. But no, when we remember that the battles started in 1968, the year!
