BRAZIL HAS ALREADY CHANGED. LIKE FRANCE JUST AFTER 1968...

You never know what you can wait from the "day after". After all the huge noise caused by May 1968 in Paris, there was in June an election and who won? The conservative Charles De Gaulle, one of the main goals of the protesters. And he won with a large margin of votes.

So, the conclusion at that time was: all that movement in May was useless. The conservatives won. But nothing could be more wrong than this conclusion. The time gave the victory to May 1968. De Gaulle made a government everything but remarkable and the movement of May 1968 changed the world in a lot of aspects, from politics to economy, from sexual behavior to the education. Time showed that all that noise caused by students and workers had sense and that was necessary to change. And the world changed, adopting many of the things that the demonstrators demanded.

All this situation is remembered now in Brazil. After demonstrations that took by surprise all the countries, things seem to be calm and cool. But if you pay attention in what is happenning you will see that a lot of things changed since then and will continue to change. The sensation is that is all over. But it is not. If you take a closer look to the Brazilian reality today, one month after the eclosion of the manifestations, you will see another country. And this country is better, far better than the other.

"DAY AFTER" DE 1968 PARECIA UMA DECEPÇÃO. MAS FOI UMA RETUMBANTE VITÓRIA...

O "day after" costuma surpreender. Que o diga a eleição de Charles De Gaulle para comandar a França no final de junho de 1968. De Gaulle tinha sido, em maio daquele ano, um dos maiores alvos dos protestos estudantis que tomaram Paris, espalharam-se pelo país e acabaram por ganhar o mundo. Sua derrota era tida como certa, mas ele ganhou -- e por larga margem.

A eleição dele, no entanto, não significou uma "derrota" das manifestações de Maio de 1968 em Paris, como se poderia concluir precipitadamente. Na verdade, foi um movimento pendular que mostrou claramente: as manifestações foram demonstrações mais do que explícitas de que a insatisfação era geral na França. Mas também mostrou que a maior parcela da população, embora até apoiasse as ruidosas manifestações de maio, preferia naquele momento "pós-tudo" um pouco da segurança que De Gaulle representava.

Portanto, muito mais do que a vitória de um movimento "conservador", o "day after" de Maio de 1968 em Paris deu a impressão de que tudo aquilo tinha sido em vão. Mas o tempo mostrou que não, muito ao contrário. Grande parte do mundo repensou a política, a economia, a educação, o comportamento sexual e muito mais a partir das manifestações. E a França, assim como o mundo, nunca mais foram os mesmos. A "revolução" mudou o mundo. Não da maneira que pediam os manifestantes, mas mudou.

Ficou a lição: manifestações de massa, mesmo sem comandos específicos e com uma difusa pauta de reivindicações mudam, sim. Fazem estruturas estabelecidas tremer, provocam revisão de posturas de quem estava acomodado.

Alguém aí se lembrou da situação que estamos vivendo neste julho de 2013 no Brasil? Pois é...

IMAGINAÇÃO NO PODER. OU AO MENOS, NAS RUAS...

Uma das marcas das imensas manifestações de rua que aconteceram em Paris em 1968 foram os slogans dos manifestantes. Em cartazes e principalmente em grafitis que tomaram conta das paredes e muros da cidade, as manifestações mostraram explicitamente que a imaginação estava solta e queria o  poder (como dizia um desses grafitis).

Vamos lembrar algumas dessas milhares de frases que apareceram e que encantaram o mundo a partir de Maio de 1968? É uma seleção difícil de fazer, mas vamos a algumas delas:

- Seja cruel!

- Imaginação no poder!

- Sou marxista -- do tipo Grouxo!

- Diga "eu te amo" com paralelepípedos! (os paralelepípedos foram talvez as principais armas utilizadas pelos manifestantes em choques com a polícia)

- É proibido proibir!

- O futuro só terá o que colocarmos nele agora!

- Mulheres revolucionárias são lindas!

- Um simples fim de semana sem revolução é infinitamente mais sangrento que um mês de revolução total!

- As estruturas são para servir as pessoas, e não o contrário!

- Quanto mais você consome, menos você vive!


E há mais,muito mais. A imaginação parecia não ter limites em 1968. Vamos lembrar mais alguns desses slogans em outros posts.

IMAGINATION IN THE POWER. OR AT LEAST IN THE STREETS...

The slogans that appeared in the streets of Paris in May of 1968 were one of the most emblematic things of that period. They deserved this fame and showed that young people in the streets at that time were at least very creative people. Forty-five years after it is still interesting to remember some of these slogans, that were one of the faces of 1968 that are still alive.

Let's see some of them:

- Be cruel.

- Imagination in power.

- I am a Marxist -- of the Groucho variety.

- A single non-revolutionary weekend is infinitely more bloody than a month of total revolution.

- The future will only contain what what we put into it now.

- I love you! Oh, say it with paving stones!

- It is forbidden to forbid.

- Structures are to serve people and not the opposite!

- Imagination takes power!

- Revolutionary women are beautiful.

These are some of the thousands of examples of slogans use in the demonstrations at that time. But there is a lot more. We will try to remember more of them in other posts.

THE MARCH OF 100 THOUSAND COMPLETES 45 YEARS! AND IS STILL PRESENT IN BRAZIL...

The March of 100 Thousand: a big success that alerted the dictatorship

The strongest image of 1968 in Brazil is the "March of 100 Thousand People", that happened in Rio de Janeiro exactly 45 years ago (in June 26). The manifestation against the dictatorship was the biggest and most remarkable of that period.

Before that march, there were other similar manifestations, but none of them were so big and caught so much attention from the media. The presence of artists reinforced the coverage of that manifestation, that showed clearly how part of the Brazilian society was against the militar dictatorship.

More than 10,000 policemen were "watching" closely the manifestations but there were no shocks. The results came later -- in July all the manifestations were prohibited in the country. And even worse, in December the government announced the "AI-5", a series of decrees that closed the Congress, established the censorship for the press and restricted the human rights.

Anyway, the March of 100 Thousand became the most emblematic event of 1968 in Brazil. And it is remembered on and on, specially at that time, when manifestations in the streets against the government are been promoted all over the country.

A passeata dos 100 mil, um grande sucesso

Amanhã (26/6) faz 45 anos que aconteceu a "Passeata dos 100 Mil", a maior e mais impactante manifestação de rua do agitado ano de 1968 no Brasil. E este blog que trata do "ano que mudou tudo" completa um ano.

A Passeata dos 100 Mil impressionou pelo tamanho da manifestação (na época, a população do Brasil era menos da metade da atual) e por sua repercussão. Aconteceu depois de uma série de outras manifestações, que tinham sido reprimidas pelo polícia. Mais de 300 pessoas já haviam sido presas. Mas desta vez a ditadura permitiu a manifestação, que foi um sucesso para os organizadores -- a multidão parecia não ter fim e a presença de artistas garantiu o destaque da marcha na mídia.

Foi um protesto pacífico, sem violência, acompanhado de perto por 10 mil policiais. Começou por volta das 14 h daquele 26 de junho e em uma hora o número de participantes dobrou. Foi um impacto.

Evidente que a ditadura não gostou. Um mês depois foram proibidas todas as manifestações públicas e em dezembro veio o golpe final: o AI-5, em que caiu a máscara e a ditadura foi "oficialmente" implantada.

Nestes dias de tantas manifestações de rua pelo Brasil, a Passeata dos 100 Mil voltou a ser lembrada. E reforçou sua importância -- com o tempo, ela passou a ser a manifestação mais emblemática do conturbado ano de 1968 no Brasil!

BRAZILIAN PROTESTS ALREADY CHANGED THE COUNTRY. SIMILAR TO MAY 1968...

Brazil has already changed with the street manifestations agains almost everything, that are still happening all over the country. The transports fare, that was the main theme of the protesters, was announced yesterday by the government. But there is still a vast roll of things asked by the Brazilian people.

Anyway, the movement comes now to its most important moment: what next? The trend is to have less and less manifestations, even with a lot of things to complain about the government. And the main mistake in this case is to say that the movement "achieved nothing". This vision is wrong. Brazil is already another country.

This wrong analysis was also made about May 1968 in France. Then, despite of all the protests that paralyzed the country, there was a presidential election in July and Charles De Gaulle, one of the aims of the manifestations, won and won easily. So some people said that "all the movement was for nothing". But this is a blind observation. It is easy to verify that not just France, but the world changed a lot after May 1968, in several areas like politics, economy, behavior, entertainment.

Nowadays in Brazil the situation is similar. All the movement that started at the beggining of June already changed Brazil completely. It is soon to say what is the face of this new country. But there is no doubt that we are living in a new nation. And that, for sure, is very good news!
