1968 - "Hair", the play of the contraculture

"Hair", the rock musical, was first shown off-Broadway in October 1967. But the musical that showed to the world the Flower Power, really appeared for the public in April 1968 on Broadway and became a huge success.

The play was everything  but traditional. The musical treated of themes like drugs, sexuality, irreverence and had a famous nude scene (that attracted most of the people to the theatres at that time).

It was a schock. But also was an instantaneous success and not just in America. More than schocked people were fascinated by the musical that beyond the themes and the nudity had fantastic songs like "Age of Aquarius" and "Good Morning, Starshine".

The story of a tribe of hippies that lived in New Yok City and adopted all the contracultural way of life was at the same time incredible and fantastic. The sexual freedmon, the irreverence of traditional symbols like the American flag, the use of drugs was not seen until this rock musical.

And the final scene, where the actors invite the public to the stage, was even more different and spetacular.

As a result of all this "chemistry", "Hair" was a landmark. It changed the theater, influenced the spectators' behavior, put clearly some questions that were not opened at that time (like the Vietnam war).

"Hair" was what they call "the face of 1968" -- different, unexpected, breathtaking.
