Baader-Meinhof: a violence that lasted 30 years |
The night of April 3rd, 1968 (of course), was not a calm one in Frankfurt, Germany: two buildings were in fire and the firemen had to work hard to solve the problem. But after some time became clear that these events meant much, much more than just people running off their houses and seeing them burning. It was in fact the start of a wave of violence that lasted 30 years in Germany, provoking lots of deaths by the terrorist group Baader-Meinhoff that at the night of 1968 started its violent actions.
There were no serious injuries as a consequence of the fire in Frankfurt at that night of 1968. But the firemen discovered that the fire was caused, in both building, by artefacts produced by terrorists, including plastic bottles, batteries and an alarm clock. The investigation started and the police, after some time, arrested a couple: Andreas Baader and Gudrun Esslin. They did not disguise their intentions. Instead, revealed that they were part of a protest group, a violent one, that protested against almost everything -- especially the Vietnam War, the main target of protests at that year.
The group seemed to be no fear, no limits. Ulrike Meinhof, one of its members, published an article in the press defending the couple Andreas Baader and Grudrun Esslin saying the attacks meant nothing compared with the Vietnam War and the violence in South Africa, that lived then a lot of shocks between protesters and the police as a consequence of the "apartheid".
The group did not to stop its initiatives and at the same time Germany started to have shocks between students and the police, that resulted in deaths and hundreds of injuries.
In such an environment, the couple who started the wave of terrorism went to the court and the judgement was a "hit" in the media. During his allegation, Gudrun Ensslin was clear: "I am not talking about burning mattresses. I am talking about children burned in Vietnam. I will never accept the trend of this capitalist society for the fascism".
The couple was condemned but escaped from the jail. The group became more and more violent lasted until the end of the 1990s.
So the period of violence did not stop completely during 30 years. And it all started in 1968, as usual...
