1968 is well known as a year of
remarkable manifestations in the streets against the war. And at that year
another important step was taken toward peace: the signature of the Treaty on
the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the NPT.
A lot of people say that NPT is useless because a lot
of countries still represent a threat to the future of the mankind, using until
today nuclear weapons. But the treaty was very important: it represents the
first step to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. It is true that countries
like India, Pakistan and North Korea possess nuclear weapons nowadays and
announce it proudly. On the other hand, important countries like the United
States, Russia, United Kingdom, France and China joined the treaty.
And it is also important to remember that more
countries have joined the Treaty than any other disarmament agreement. In other
words, most of the world shows real concern about nuclear weapons and their
proliferation.
It all started in 1968. Again...
