The
Beetle became involuntarily one of the symbols of 1968 protests. In
versions full of colors and strange drawings it was considered the
"official car" of the hippies, for example.

Why did this happen? It is hard to know. Maybe because it was a small car, just the opposite of the "rich" models that were produced then by Ford, GM etc. Maybe because, even being small, it was a strong and economic car, what could be considered as an "anti-establishment" product.
The fact is that even today, decades after 1968, the Beetle is still a beloved car in countries like Brazil. It is not produced anymore but there is a lot of people who simply love the model and consider it as one of the most cars ever produced.
So, the Beetle is a strange case of success. No surprise when you talk about a 1968 model...
