The night of December 13th 1968 in
Brazil lasted for decades. At that night, the military government announced the
AI-5 (Institutional Act #5) that in few words could be defined as the official
installation of dictatorship in the country. The Congress was shut, hundreds of
people were arrested with no formal accusation, the press was censored…
The government “justified” the AI-5
as a necessity to end terrorism. It was, in fact, an act to install military
dictatorship with no kind of contestation.
Until the middle of the 1980s
Brazil lived this long night. There is a lot of things to say about AI-5 and
its consequences and we will do it in this blog, in other posts. And it all
started in 1968, “that year”, you know…
