Japan was not out of 1968. Not really...

Protests of students in Japan in 1968

In the other side of the world (in a Brazilian perspective), Japan also had an 1968 that was everything but calm. Also there, a wave of protests, mainly leaded by students, resulted in hundreds of people injured, a lot of shocks with the police.

In the beginning of that unique year, the first manifestation resulted in 90 people injured. At January the 18th, Zengakuren (a kind of union of students) organized a protest against the arrive of the U.S. atomic submarine Enterprise in Sasebo, Japan. The violence of repression was transmitted by TV but did not stop. At March 11th the same Zengakuren protested against the construction of an American Hospital in Tokyo. This time hundreds of people were injured in schocks with the police. Nineteen days after students ocuppied the hospital. More protest, more repression, more people injured.

In June 15th the protest of the Japanese students were in solidarity for the French students that promoted a wave of manifestation in May. That was not all. In October 9th happened the biggest protest of that year: 1 million people participated of an one-hour strike and more shocks were registered. And at October 21th a "pacific" manifestation against the Vietnam war resulted in fights with the police and hundreds of people were injured.

So, the whole yar was unforgettable also in Japan. The country started to change and never more looked like the same. You know, we were in 1968...
