Dictatorship, yes. But the press showed its guns in Brazil. In 1968!

As we said in a previous post in this blog, 1968 was the "official installation" of dictatorship in Brazil, trhough the annnouncement of "AI-5", a text that stablished that almost all was prohibited from that date (December 13th) on.

Well, the long night of terror was then installed in the country for almost 20 years and one of the main restrictions was the censorship to the press.

The violent decision shocked the country. But since the beginning the press showed that it would be a hard work to the government to "punish" the readers with no news "against" the militar power.

Already in December 14th, a few hours after the announcement of AI-5, "Jornal do Brasil", one of the most important Brazilian newspapers at that time, showed clearly that "OK, we will live with censorship but this will not be easy for them". Although the front-page was censored, some things were not noticed by the government officials.

At the front-page, in the upright, a note said just that: "Yesterday was the Blind's date". The weather report also at the front-page was different from the usual. It was summer in Brazil but the text was:

"Dark weather. Stifling temperature. The air is breathless. Strong wind devastates the country."

Despite the obvious messages, the censorship let this texts appear at the front-page of one of the most important Brazilian newspapers.

So the country was informed about the dictatorship but at the same time noticed that the control would not be total. Typical of 1968, huh?
