Everybody who is nowadays more than 40 years old remember it clearly:
the Indians were always in old black-and-white movies the “bad guys”, cruel,
killers, rapers.
This changed completely since (guess when) 1968. At that year a group of
American Indians founded AIM (American Indian Movement), one of the most
successful initiatives in the story of social movements in the U.S.
AIM was born in an environment of protests against almost everything but
specially anti-Vietnam war. Taking advantage of this climate, a group created
in Minneapolis this organization to address a huge list of themes like the
combat to poverty, hunger and police harassment that prevailed in most of the
American society against Indians.
The movement created in 1968 was a rapid success. Most of the complaints
were heard after AIM showed its capacity to gain trust from the public opinion –
situation that became even more clear in 1971, when gathered members from
across the country to a protest in Washington The results were excellent for
the protesters and since then Indians transformed themselves in one of most
popular groups in the US. They take almost everything they ask for. And it is
certainly a case of PR success as they always attract a lot o media for any of
their many manifestations.
So the scenario changed completely for the American Indians. When did it
start? 1968, sure!
