May 20th, 1968, Paris. The world seemed to change forever. And it did...

May the 20th, 1968. A Monday, just like today. May 1968 seemed to be a point with no return. At that day, exactly 45 years ago, almost everything stopped in Paris: subway, bus, telephone and a lot of other services. The general strike was a success. Approximately 6 million people did not work at that day in France and students maintained their series of protests in the streets of Paris, specially in  the Quartier Latin.

In this scenario, May 20th 1968 seemed to indicate that the chaos was installed for many, many time. The French government looked weak, very weak and the environment of change seemed to be the great winner of a battle that started at the beginning of that month.

But as we were in 1968, nothing was for sure. The predictions may fail even with so strong evidences. The world seemed to be other from that moment on. And was, but not in the way it seemed to be at that time. 1968 had much more surprises prepared...

A manchete do "Diário de Lisboa" mostrava o caos

No dia 20 de maio de 1968, uma segunda-feira (como hoje) a greve geral que começou dias antes atingiu seu ponto máximo em Paris. Praticamente nada funcionou naquele dia: metrô, ônibus, telefone e muitos outros serviços permaneceram parados. O número de grevistas na França foi calculado em 6 milhões de pessoas e as marchas de estudantes tomavam conta de Paris, com seus protestos e slogans originais.

Com esse cenário, aquele dia parecia indicar que o caos estava definitivamente instalado na capital francesa, com ameaças cada vez maiores de se espalhar por outros pontos do país e, mais ainda, pelo mundo.

O movimento parecia vitorioso. O governo De Gaulle balançava e a queda parecia inexorável. O Maio de 1968 atingia seu ápice.

Como estávamos em 1968, no entanto, nada disso se confirmaria. Mas há 45 anos parecia que o mundo mudaria para sempre. E mudaria mesmo, mas não da maneira como então se imaginava!

May 13th - A march of 800,000 and general strike. But we were in 1968...

As we all know, May 1968 in Paris was everything but calm. But even in this scenario May 13th deserved a lot of spolights. At that day, workers and students went together for the first time and promoted a general strike.

The movement was a success. Something like 800 thousand people (students, teachers and workers) marched through Paris demanding the end of Charles de Gaulle government. Another target of the protest was the police brutality during the riots that dominated the city since the beginning of that famous May. Even more, the one-day strike was transformed in a 20-day movement that spread all over France.

The government was in the corner and with no other choice proposed general elections for June. And then the unexpected happened again in 1968: the government had a big victory in the elections. It was just like if all the movemento of May in Paris just disappeared.

But that was not a big surprise. We were in 1968, remember?

13 de maio de 1968 - começa a greve geral que paralisa a França. E que não deu em nada...

O dia 13 de maio de 1968 foi particularmente impactante em Paris, mesmo levando em conta que tudo já parecia ter acontecido naquele mês e naquela cidade. Naquela data, estudantes e trabalhadores decidiram unificar seus movimentos e decretar greve geral de 24 horas, em protesto contra o governo Charles de Gaulle.

O movimento foi um sucesso. Naquele dia, uma multidão calculada em 800 mil pessoas marchou por toda a Paris, pedindo a queda do governo e ao mesmo protestando contra a violência com que a polícia reprimiu os vários protestos realizados na cidade nos dias anteriores. Mais ainda, a greve se espalhou por todo o país. Resultado: aproximadamente 20 milhões de trabalhadores paralisaram suas atividades, em um movimento que durou até o final de maio.

Parecia que o governo estava sem saída. Sem outra opção, De Gaulle convocou uma eleição geral para junho. E o resultado deixou o mundo boquiaberto: o governo ganhou, com margem folgada de votos.

Surpreendente, não? Sem dúvida. Mas nem tanto, quando se recorda que estávamos em 1968...

Sorbonne, 45 years ago. A Sunday that showed that the world was changing...

The shocks start to spread all over Paris

Exactly 45 years ago, on May the 5th 1968 (a Sunday also), "May of 1968" showed again that it was not just a mere movement of student protest. At that date, students tried to "take back" the University of Sorbonne, in Paris. Next day, the national student union, the biggest in France, together with the university teachers  union, marched to protest against the police invasion of Sorbonne.

It was not an usual march. More than 20,000 students and teachers marched to Sorbonne, that was occupied by the police. The reaction was violent and the crowd started to disperse. But the battle was just beginning. Part of students start to create barricades while others began to throw paving stones against the policemen. The answer was with the use of tear gas against the crowd and hundreds of students were arrested.

It was clear then that "May of 1968" would go far beyond the month of May of that magic year. The world was changing, clearly. Aren't we in 1968?

Há 45 anos, recrudescia o Maio de 1968. E o mundo começava a mudar...

Os protestos em Paris: um marco do ano que mudou tudo.

Faz 45 anos hoje -- no dia 5 de maio de 1968 (também um domingo) estudantes franceses enfrentaram a polícia ao tentarem ocupar a universidade de Sorbonne. O conflito deixou 487 feridos e mostrou que o clima de protesto que começara três dias antes não terminaria tão cedo.

No dia seguinte, 6 de maio, a União Nacional de Estudantes da França e o sindicato de professores universitários convocaram uma marcha de protesto contra a invasão da universidade. Mais de 20 mil estudantes, professores e simpatizantes marcharam para a Sorbonne, ainda tomada pela polícia. Os policiais reprimiram a marcha, a multidão começou a se dispersar mas alguns começaram a criar barricadas com o que estivesse à mão, enquanto outros começaram a atirar paralelepípedos contra a polícia. A resposta veio com gás lacrimogêneo e com a prisão de centenas de manifestantes.

O Maio de 1968, movimento mais emblemático do ano que mudou tudo, começava a mostrar sua força e sua importância. E ainda viria muito mais...
